Maraya AlUla: What It Is, Whether You Can Visit, and How to Fit It Into Your Trip

Maraya AlUla is a multipurpose concert, event and conference venue in Ashar Valley, about a 20-minute drive from the center of AlUla, and it holds the Guinness World Records title for the largest mirrored building in the world. You can see and photograph it once you are inside Ashar Valley, which requires a ticket, reservation or invitation; going inside the hall means an event ticket, the official guided tour when it is offered, or a reservation at the rooftop restaurant. CHAPTERS does not sell Maraya tickets on their own, since their channels are official. When a published CHAPTERS journey has Maraya in its program, that stop is part of the journey, and the journey's own page is the reference for whether entry to the hall is included. Otherwise, we offer a complete journey with transport, guide and stay, arranged around event dates and the access available.

Editorial guide by the CHAPTERS TOUR team — AlUla
The answer in one line

Maraya is a mirror-clad event venue in AlUla's Ashar Valley, not an open museum: you see and photograph it from outside once you have entered the valley with a ticket, reservation or invitation, and you go inside with an event ticket, the official guided tour when it is available, or a rooftop restaurant reservation.

What it is
A multipurpose venue for concerts, events and conferences, named for the mirrors that cover every one of its facades.
Where
Ashar Valley, about a 20-minute drive from the center of AlUla, according to Experience AlUla.
The record
The largest mirrored building in the world, a Guinness World Records title; the official platform states that 9,740 mirrored glass panels cover the building.
The hall
About 500 seats in the main auditorium, and a 26-meter floor-to-ceiling facade that opens onto the valley.
How access works
An event ticket from official channels, the official guided Maraya Tour when it is listed, or a reservation at the rooftop restaurant. There is no free walk-in access to the interior.

This guide answers the three questions most people searching for Maraya AlUla actually have: what it is, whether you can visit, and how to place it in a one- or two-day plan alongside Hegra (Mada'in Salih) and Old Town. For season, transport and landmark basics, start with the complete AlUla guide.

01

What is Maraya AlUla?

Maraya means “mirror” in Arabic, and the name is literal: a multipurpose event venue in AlUla's Ashar Valley whose facades are clad entirely in reflective panels, so the sandstone canyons and the sky bounce back off the walls and the building reads, from a distance, as a piece cut out of the landscape rather than added to it. Inside are halls and spaces for performing arts, conferences and business meetings.

Experience AlUla describes Maraya as the largest mirrored building in the world and a Guinness World Records title holder. Its auditorium has hosted international and Arab artists including Andrea Bocelli, Alicia Keys and Mohammed Abdu, alongside art exhibitions and the Hegra Conference of Nobel Laureates.

Cladding: 9,740 mirrored glass panels cover the building, according to the official platform.
Main auditorium: about 500 seats.
Facade: 26 meters from floor to ceiling, and it can open to reveal a panoramic view of Ashar Valley.
Design: the Milan-based Italian studio Giò Forma.
Uses: concerts, exhibitions, conferences and business events, plus a rooftop restaurant.

The title and figures above are quoted as Experience AlUla publishes them; what the official platform does not publish, we do not estimate.

02

Where is Maraya, and how do you reach it inside AlUla?

Maraya stands in Ashar Valley, a desert canyon landscape of wind-carved rock that the official platform places about a 20-minute drive from the center of AlUla. The detail most visitors miss: Ashar Valley is not an open public road but a gated area, and entry is conditional.

The valley
Ashar Valley, home to Maraya, four accommodation options and several restaurants, according to Experience AlUla.
From AlUla center
About a 20-minute drive.
The valley gate
Entry requires a reservation, ticket or invitation; to drive to Maraya, Ashar Gate security asks for a rooftop restaurant reservation or an event confirmation email.
Another way in
A day pass to a pool, spa or restaurant at one of the valley's hotels also grants access to the valley.
Tour meeting point
Maraya itself, according to the official tour page.

In practice, if you intend to see Maraya, work out two things together: what will get you into the valley, and at what time. For major concerts, arrivals may be organized through designated parking and shuttle transfers set out on the event page, so read it before assuming you can drive to the door.

These arrangements are as the official platform publishes them at the time of writing and can change with the event and the season; check them before every visit.

03

Can you go inside Maraya without an event?

The honest answer: not freely. The official Maraya page states that there is currently no general public access to the inside of the hall, and the Ashar Valley page says a valid ticket must be presented to enter Maraya. At the same time, the same platform lists the Maraya Tour: a 45-minute guided visit in English and Arabic that explores key interior spaces including performance areas, shown as open daily and available year-round for groups of up to 15, with all ages welcome and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. So a way inside without a concert exists, but it is organized, limited and booked in advance.

Way inWhat it gives youWhat you need
Concert or event ticketEntry to the hall and the event itself, plus the facade before and afterA ticket from official channels, and the event confirmation to show at the valley gate
Official guided tour45 minutes inside the key spaces and performance areas, with access to the Maraya coffee shopAdvance booking through the official platform and the ticketing outlet it links to; maximum 15 people
Rooftop restaurant reservationThe rooftop, its view over the valley and a close-up of the facadeA confirmed restaurant reservation to show at gate security
Day pass at a valley hotelEntry to Ashar Valley and a view of Maraya from outside, not the hallA pool, spa or restaurant booking at one of the hotels
Driving by without a bookingNothing guaranteed; the gate requires a ticket, reservation or invitationNot applicable; arrange one of the options above
  1. 01Open the What's On section of Experience AlUla and check whether an event at Maraya falls within your dates.
  2. 02If not, open the Maraya Tour page and confirm a slot on your day; allow 45 minutes plus arrival and security time.
  3. 03Book early and keep the confirmation on your phone to show at Ashar Gate.
  4. 04If you are traveling with CHAPTERS, send us the confirmation so transport and guide are arranged around it.

Do not rely on social media clips showing “normal” entry: the official position is that the interior is not open to the public, the tour and events are the organized exceptions, and their schedule can change with the season. The only reference that counts is the official platform on the day of your visit.

04

The best time to photograph Maraya

Maraya changes with the light; what you photograph at ten in the morning is not what you photograph before sunset. Because the facade reflects both the mountains and the sky, the real question is not “what is the best time?” but “which picture do you want?”

Early morning: soft, low light renders the canyons clearly in the reflection and the valley is at its quietest; the best moment for a wide frame with the building and the mountains together.
Midday: harsh reflections, high contrast and heat; better for architectural detail and close-ups than for the wide view.
The hour before sunset: the rock warms and the sky grades through its colors, so the facade reads like a moving painting; the most sought-after time and the least quiet.
Evening and events: the building's lighting and concert nights give entirely different pictures, but photography inside an event follows the organizers' rules.

This is general guidance on light, not guaranteed timings: weather, dust and season all change it, and access to the valley itself depends on a booking or ticket. Use the best-time guide to choose the month, and the packing guide for midday heat.

05

What is around Maraya in Ashar Valley?

Ashar Valley is not only Maraya's address but a complete pocket of accommodation and dining, which is what makes combining the visit with a stay there a logical choice for anyone who wants to see the facade in more than one light.

The rooftop restaurant: Maraya Social by British chef Jason Atherton, directly on top of Maraya with a view over the valley's canyons; a reservation there is what gets you through the gate for it.
Accommodation: the official platform lists four options in the valley, among them Banyan Tree AlUla, Habitas AlUla and Caravan by Habitas.
Other dining: restaurants inside the valley's hotels, and food trucks at the Caravan site.
The landscape: canyons and wind-carved rock formations, the very thing Maraya's facade reflects.

Because entry to the valley is conditional, staying at one of its hotels solves access by itself: you see Maraya morning and evening without arranging it each time, while entry to the hall itself still depends on an event or the tour.

06

How to fit Maraya into one or two days with Hegra and Old Town

Maraya is a short stop in time, whether a photograph from outside, a 45-minute tour or a dinner, but it is tied to timings more tightly than any other landmark in AlUla. The rule: fix the Maraya slot first (event, tour or restaurant), then build the rest of the day around it, not the other way around. Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also visited through timed, organized entry, so do not place the two slots back to back.

ElementIn one dayIn two days
HegraMorning, with a confirmed slotMorning of day one, with a confirmed slot
MarayaOne afternoon stop: the tour, or an exterior photo if valley access is arrangedLate afternoon of day two in better light, or the evening of day one if there is an event
Old TownBefore sunset and into the eveningEvening of day one at an unhurried pace
The Oasis, Dadan or Jabal IkmahDropped unless time allowsMorning of day two, before Maraya
FlexibilityLow; one delayed slot removes a stopHigher; Maraya can move between the days according to the events calendar

The framework above is a planning example, not a product for sale; Hegra entry times and the availability of the Maraya tour or an event are checked at booking. For a complete 48-hour plan, read the AlUla in 48 hours guide.

07

How CHAPTERS arranges Maraya within a journey

CHAPTERS is an AlUla tour operator, and our journeys include transport, guide and stay. Maraya enters the program as a stop within a complete day, not as a ticket we sell:

We place the Maraya slot where it belongs in the day and align transport with the valley gate and the event or tour timing.
We arrange a photo stop or a timed visit in the Maraya area when access allows, and we tell you plainly if that is not possible on your dates.
We help you read the official events calendar and pick the day that puts Maraya, Hegra and Old Town in sequence rather than in conflict.
We coordinate the stay: inside Ashar Valley if you want Maraya in every light, or elsewhere in AlUla according to the character of the journey.

Tickets for Maraya concerts, events and the guided tour are sold through official channels only. CHAPTERS does not sell standalone Maraya tickets; when a published journey has Maraya in its program, that stop is part of the journey, and the journey's page is the reference for whether entry to the hall is included. What we guarantee in every case is that everything around the slot, the road, the guide, the stay and the fallbacks, is arranged.

08

Common mistakes when visiting Maraya

Assuming Maraya is an open landmark you can drive up to and photograph at will: the valley is gated and entry is conditional.
Planning on the guided tour without booking: groups are capped at fifteen and slots are reserved in advance.
Placing the Hegra slot and the Maraya slot back to back with no margin for the road and security.
Shooting at midday and then wondering about the harsh reflections; morning and late afternoon are kinder to the eye and the lens.
Relying on an old clip or an unofficial post to know what is available; the events program changes with the season.
Ignoring security and organizers' instructions inside an event, especially on photography.
Forgetting the confirmation email: without it you will not pass Ashar Gate by car.

The remaining practical questions about booking and policies are answered on the FAQ page.
