How to Get to AlUla: Airport, Roads and Distances from Madinah and Beyond

AlUla lies in northwest Saudi Arabia, administratively within the Madinah region, and the nearest big city is Madinah itself, roughly 300 km to the south. There are two ways in: fly to AlUla International Airport (IATA code ULH), which has direct flights from Riyadh, Jeddah and other cities, or drive. The official Experience AlUla platform puts the road trip from Madinah or Tabuk at about three hours, and in practice it can take up to four depending on your starting point and stops.

01

Where is AlUla?

AlUla is a governorate in northwest Saudi Arabia, administratively part of the Madinah region and located in its northern reaches. It borders the Tabuk city area to the north, Tayma to the east, Khaybar to the southeast and AlWajh and Duba to the west. In other words, it sits on the overland axis between Madinah and Tabuk, which is why driving in from either city is the most common way to arrive.

The distance from Madinah to AlUla is roughly 300 km, covered in about three hours according to the destination's official platform, stretching to four with stops. Jeddah and Riyadh are far enough away that flying is the sensible choice for most visitors from either city.

Hegra (Mada'in Salih): the UNESCO World Heritage Site, north of AlUla town.
Old Town, the AlUla Oasis and the AlJadidah Arts District: the destination's everyday heart and its evening walks.
Dadan and Jabal Ikmah: the historical axis of AlUla's ancient kingdoms and their inscriptions.
Elephant Rock, Sharaan Nature Reserve, Ashar Valley and Maraya: nature and events, scattered across real distances.

The sites are spread out. AlUla is not a town you explore on foot but a destination stretched along a long valley, and that shapes where you stay and how you move, as the next sections show.

02

Arriving by air: AlUla International Airport

AlUla International Airport (IATA code ULH) is the destination's air gateway. It lies east of AlUla town, about half an hour by car from the center and roughly 50 km from Hegra. It opened as a domestic airport and later became international, and some booking systems still show its former name, Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport; both names refer to the same airport.

At the time of our editorial review, the official Experience AlUla platform listed the following direct flights, on seasonal schedules that change between winter and summer:

Domestic: from Riyadh and Jeddah (Saudia), and from Riyadh and Dammam (flynas).
International: from Dubai (flydubai) and Doha (Qatar Airways), plus regional routes that operate seasonally.
Some flights do not run in certain months; check the official site or the airline before booking, and never rely on a previous season's schedule.

What to do when you land

  1. 01Arrange your way out of the airport before you arrive: taxis there are limited and first come, first served according to the official platform, so do not make them your only plan.
  2. 02If you are renting a car, the rental desks are inside the airport, and the official platform recommends renting a car, with or without a driver, for the whole stay.
  3. 03The destination runs a visitor center at the airport that helps with booking and rescheduling experiences and with site information; stop by if you hold an unconfirmed ticket.
  4. 04If the meeting point agreed with CHAPTERS is the airport, transport from there is part of your trip and you need no further arrangement.

CHAPTERS does not sell or book flights on your behalf; you choose your own flight, and we build the ground program around your arrival time.

03

Arriving by car: from Madinah, Tabuk, Jeddah and Riyadh

The official platform describes the roads between major Saudi cities as good and well maintained, and states that AlUla is about a three-hour drive from Madinah to the south and from Tabuk to the north, with the trip falling within a four-hour window depending on your starting point and stops. Jeddah and Riyadh it describes as longer road trips that call for breaks, without giving a time.

Starting pointApproximate drive timeWhat to know
MadinahAbout three hours, up to four with stops (roughly 300 km)The most common option; several rental companies, and its airport is a convenient alternative if there is no direct flight to AlUla
TabukAbout three hours, up to four with stopsSuits travelers arriving from the north or combining AlUla with Tabuk's destinations; rental companies available too
JeddahA long road trip of several hours; check road maps before setting outFlying is faster for most visitors; driving suits those who want the road to be part of the journey, with a stop
RiyadhA long road trip of several hours; check road maps before setting outA direct flight is the practical choice; driving needs fuel and rest planning and a second driver

For drivers from outside the Kingdom: the official platform requires a valid driver's license from your country of residence and strongly recommends carrying an international driving permit alongside it. Car rental is widely available in Madinah, Tabuk and at AlUla airport itself.

If Madinah is your starting point, the real question is not how many hours but one day or two, and that question has its own full article.

04

Which way suits you? A quick comparison

Way inApproximate timeBest for
Direct flight to AlUlaThe shortest total time; then about half an hour from the airport to the centerVisitors from Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam or abroad, and anyone with only two or three days
Fly to Madinah, then driveAbout three hours by car after landing, up to fourThose combining a visit to Madinah with AlUla, or who found no direct flight on their dates
Drive from Madinah or TabukAbout three hours, up to four with stopsFamilies who prefer their own car, and anyone who wants freedom of movement inside AlUla
Drive from Jeddah or RiyadhA long road trip of several hours; check maps before setting outThose who want the road to be part of the adventure and have the time and a second driver
Organized transport within a CHAPTERS tripStarts at the agreed meeting point, with no driving and no mapsAnyone who wants a day without a steering wheel, families, and first-time visitors

The simple rule: if AlUla is your only destination, a direct flight saves you a full day on the road. If Madinah is already in your plan, driving from there makes sense, provided you plan for moving around inside AlUla, not only for getting there.

05

Getting around AlUla: the distances are longer than you expect

AlUla is a stretched-out destination, not a compact city: the airport lies east of town, Hegra to the north, Old Town and the Oasis in the middle, and the natural landmarks are scattered. Experience AlUla notes that most key sites are a 30- to 60-minute drive from one another, which is why it explicitly recommends renting a car, with or without a driver, for the whole stay.

Rental car: the most flexible option, with desks at the airport and in Madinah and Tabuk.
Car with driver: suits anyone who would rather not drive unfamiliar roads, especially at night after a long experience.
Taxis and the Darb AlUla app: the app offers shared rides between landmarks such as Old Town and Maraya with live tracking; airport taxis are limited.
Public transit: a year-round bus line links the Eskan district with AlJadidah via Aziziya, AlMahash and AlRuzayqiyah, every 30 minutes during operating hours. Useful within town, not for reaching the heritage sites.
Hop-on hop-off buses: a service the official platform lists with lines starting at Winter Park; it may not operate every season, so check its status before relying on it.

Choosing where to stay is part of your transport plan: a base close to the area you will visit most saves road time every day and makes the return after an evening experience shorter and calmer.

On CHAPTERS trips, movement between sites is part of the program from the meeting point to the return point, so you do not need a rental car on the trip days themselves.

06

The best time to drive, and the safety rules

The road to AlUla is long and open, and parts of it are far from services. The official platform notes that cell and 5G coverage is good around AlUla but weak or absent in remote areas, reason enough on its own to download offline maps before you set out.

Leave in the morning so you arrive before sunset; daylight driving is easier on an unfamiliar road, and in summer the morning hours are cooler.
Fill up in Madinah or Tabuk before leaving the city, and plan at least one rest stop.
Download offline road maps and save your accommodation address and meeting point.
Check your license, insurance and rental terms, and child seats if children are traveling.
Avoid driving back the same day after a full day of experiences if you can; fatigue is more dangerous than the road.
Consider the season: summer demands a very early start, winter means an early sunset. The best-time-to-visit guide explains the differences.

These are general editorial guidelines and do not replace checking road and weather conditions on the day you travel.

07

How CHAPTERS organizes transport within the trip

CHAPTERS trips include transport from the agreed meeting point, the guide, and accommodation as set out in the program. What they do not include is the flight ticket: you reach AlUla, or the agreed meeting point, and we take care of everything from there to the return point.

  1. 01Choose your trip from the AlUla journeys or request a private program, and tell us how you will arrive: by flight (and its landing time) or in your own car.
  2. 02We agree on the meeting point and time in the final confirmation: the airport, your accommodation in AlUla, or another point set by the program.
  3. 03From that moment, movement between sites, the guide and the accommodation named in the program are our responsibility until the agreed return point.
  4. 04Tell us the guests' ages and needs, such as child seats or difficulty walking, so we choose the right vehicle and pace.

Anything not stated in the final confirmation, such as a flight, a rental car, or transport before the meeting point or after the return point, is not part of the trip. Read the policies before booking.

08

Common mistakes when getting to AlUla

Landing without a plan for leaving the airport and counting on a taxi that may not be available.
Booking a late-arriving flight followed by an early-morning experience the next day with no time to rest.
Assuming the sites are next to each other; in reality most are half an hour to an hour apart.
Choosing accommodation by its photographs rather than by its position on your route.
Driving at night on an unfamiliar road after a long day from Madinah or Jeddah.
Relying on cell coverage in remote areas instead of maps downloaded in advance.
Not checking the seasonal flight schedule, since some routes do not operate in certain months.
Renting a car without confirming the license requirements and the international driving permit.

Most of these mistakes are solved by one question before booking: how do I get from the moment I arrive to the first site, and from the last site to my bed?
